The French woman. Does she really exist?

Francuska kobieta. Klasyczna. Elegancka. Szykowna.

Elegancja to odmowa.

Ja dorzuciłabym jeszcze dozę koloru i uśmiechu.

The French woman. Classy. Elegant. Chic. Who hasn't heard about the style of the French woman? The style which many women are trying to follow and apply in their own outfits.

But what if the French woman is a just myth? And she is as much a mess as we are? What if the style, we are so praising, is just an easy way out? What if the French women are all the same, trying to disappear on the streets using the cover of elegant but quiet style. Either way, there has to be something about them - in otherwise they would not be so known to the whole world and books and articles wouldn't be written to find out how do they do this?

I believe it comes down to 5 simple rules. The rules we might take as an advise and apply them to our own wardrobe.

Elegance is a refusal.

The French woman is nonchalant and will apply it in every aspect of her life - also in style. In France, you should not suppose to stand out because of your crazy hair cut, too many colours or too much body exposure. The French woman on the other hand will cultivate the effortless look, great materials and subdued colours.

She says no to what doesn't flatter her.

She is as much aware of her own body imperfections as we are. But she is not trying to ignore or hide them. She is making something interesting of them. And clothes are there to help. If trousers are not flattering her body, she simply will be wearing skirts.

She says no to trends.

Trends are fun and interesting to read about in the fashion magazines and books in the weekends. But that is it. The French woman will only buy the item if she is absolutely sure it would fit the rest of her wardrobe and can be used for longer than just one season.

She says no to sweatpants.

Amen to it. The French woman wears sweatpants only when she is actually working out. And of course, she is interested in being comfortable as much as we are, she just does it in jeans, pearls and trench:).

She says yes to the classics.

The important moments of buying her first watch, leather bag or timeless coat are so cherished because it can be that she will be wearing them forever. If she likes certain pair of jeans or boots or T-shirts  or lipstick (and they definitely fit her) she is not afraid to buy a few of them. Yes - the same ones.  Why to search any further if those fit me perfectly?

We don't have to agree with everything and not everything will fit everyone. I would add some note of colours and smile:).
